ice biking

Been a little bit since I updated. We've been killing it out at dryer rd on wednesday and sundays. I think this last wednesday night it was around 5 whole degrees! Well we braved it, even though my light went out it was a nice moonlit night so I wasn't even worried. My shock is another story, i think it needs to be rebuilt pretty bad. Riding today I had zero front end and 5 inches in the rear. Really odd to corner and descend, but great to climb with.

Man did we get a big ol ice storm plus about 6 inches of snow on top of it overnight. On my commute home on the ny thruway, it took me about 2 hours to go 25-30 miles. In this section of highway I saw 23! cars off the side off the road, most of em totalled. Saw a few cars even flipped upside down.

I managed to escape unharmed, but it didn't last long. On my way into work on saturday, I smoked a deer with my car. Didn't even see it till the last second (isn't that how they usually happen). Luckily, I escaped unharmed, the deer got a 9.4 from the judges for its 1 and a half gainer with an inverted twist. Seeing as how my focus is such a small car, I'm suprised it didnt come thru the windshield. My hood and grill were crushed, but at least it was drive-able as I still had to get to work on time.

Top Ten Reasons to ask Santa for a Powermeter

Message by Frank Overton
If you have the bling this holiday season, a powermeter will bring 10 times more to your game than any ultra light frame, aero gizmo-zoo, or carbon component. And with the rise in popularity amongst the amateur ranks, the competition from training with power is fiercer than ever.

It's friggin cold

Hey Everybody that visits,
, lets see where everyone is from that reads my blog!!

Wow have the temps dropped off quite a bit or what? I did some riding on the snow this past weekend for the first time in a while (actually since last year). We don't have enough snow right now to do any xc skiing, so I can still hit the dirt. Got plans to ride tomorrow night with my bro's over at dryer rd. If we keep those trails packed in it should be some good riding throughout the winter.

At least for the most part the majority of all my training is in the gym so it keeps me nice and warm!

I took a nice early day from work today as the weather the past 2 days has been great. Alas, as i got home it was pissing rain here in victor. Did i hide on the couch, hell no jumped on my mt. bike and pulled off a few hours in the mud. It was actually quite enjoyable to be out there in the rain, and mud, splashing thru puddles.

Same old story new rider...seems like nothing ever changes in the cycling world. Oh well at least WADA has a new sport to chase down as I saw that Dick Pound claims all the hockey players are juiced, at least that was the headline in todays newspaper.

So far eBaying some items has worked pretty well for me, making a few quick bucks. I'm waiting a bit to get some of my big ticket items up online.

The cold weather has finally hit here, I think yesterday it was 2 degrees with the windchill, I planned on riding down to keuka lake where erin's parents were graciously hosting a nice thanksgiving dinner, but I wussed out cause it was so damn cold. It tucked into bed and slept for a while. Hopefully tomorrow I'll bust out the winter gear and freeze my ass of as the nicer day (sunday) I have to work, but still hope to get a ride in.

I've procrastinated enough...time to go rent a movie and spend the night on the trainer.

busy, busy, busy

Man, what has happened. Seems like I have absolutely zero time to chill anymore. Always seems like I'm striving toward meeting some new challenge. I might need to schedule a little x-time into my calendar just to make sure I relax a little bit.

It's official! I met with Matt, the Fisher rep, going to be on a 29er next season, all decked out with Bontrager carbon goodies! I may even hit a few races sporting the big B jersey.

Sunday morning was a good hard ride with Mark and Suzanne out at Dryer Road Park in Victor. If you're around check the place out its really coming along.

Right after that was a good ol fashion day of fun, doing some wine touring in the finger lakes with the crew. I'll post up some pics tomorrow evening so check those out.

Skimming through my food diary the past 2 weeks, i've been pretty good about hitting my food goals, but whats with all the friggin cookies? I might be in competition with the cookie monster over the number consumed on a daily basis. It's a bit like my personal kryptonite :)

Nov 13th and still 60 degrees!

Whoops, I've been slacking a little bit here. Especially been slacking on the podcast. What can I say, I've been busy.

My new toy is virtual pc , allows me to use winblows xp on my mac and upload my power-tap files of the road bike and hac4 files of the mountain bike, see the altitude for todays ride on the dirt (yah its in the metric system if you can't figure it out by now...). Agh, i feel so dirty!

Picture 1

I did some night riding on Friday night, with Mark, Suzanne their pup cadence, and my pup lizzy. We headed over to Dryer Road in Victor. The riding was perfect, almost full moon sky meant you could pretty much see everything without your lights. Chasing after the dogs (especially lizzy) when they chased after deer wasn't fun, but we put red flashers on em so we could spot em from a mile away. Some craziness ensued at one point, cadence took off after a deer, then lizzy did. We could hear her up in the meadow barking at them, so we waited for her. Turned off the lights and sat as she usually comes back, however we heard this thundering roar of movement and could sense something charging right at us! We were in the dark so it was a quick grab the lights, just to my left a deer bounces by and a huge buck lands right in front of Suzanne, quick change of direction and it bounds off right off her back wheel! Lizzy comes flying down to us all happy she had herded them to us, meanwhile we were frozen in fear. After that we decided to leave, only to be greeted by someone shining a flashlight and "Down Here Please" Seem the local 5-0 didn't like where we were parked at. Ooops, at least we were on our way out..

Did I just see a commercial for the tv show "House" in which the patient is a mountain biker who is blood doping?

Weekend rides

I was able to get in some decent riding this weekend. The weather has been incredible for early November. I got the cake back from GBC after Mark layed his steely eyed touch to her and got her running smooth again. So what was I to do but take er out for a night ride over to Dryer Rd park. It was nice to head there on a nice clear night and hit the trails all alone (except for a few rattled deer).

Something incredibly serene and a bit spooky about trouncing around in the woods by yourself.

What the hell, I just got checked my feeds. What is up with
??

Saturday, I hopped in for a ride with the GBC boys (and gal)...Mark and Suzanne, John and Trumble, but Chris wussed out!! We went to Shindagin Hollow down in Ithaca and it was an awesome day, nearly 70 degrees, the trails were a little muddier than we thought they would be, but thats autumn.

The Pictures of Shingagin can be found here

There ya go, got my work cut out for me if I want to hit it up big time in the upcoming season.

I hit the road tonight, yup in the dark, headlights and flasher were blazing. It is amazing how peaceful and serene it is at night in the countryside. Thankfully it was a nice night out except for the crazy headwind. The cool part is spotlighting all the deer and other wildlife. My only complaint is that I wish drivers would turn their friggin highbeams off when I'm coming. I'm gonna go blind.

Anyways, I need to
and if you need to lose some too check out a cool piece of software called
. Should help you keep your weight in check over those long winter months.

Back in the saddle again...

Cue the Aerosmith tune...

Well it's that time of year again. Off season is non-existent for those who want be slammin it come next time the rubber hits the dirt.

I was on the trainer last night for the 1st ride, actually wasn't all that bad. Just hope it stays that way all the time. The hilarious part was the fact that my dog stood next to me, seeing my legs spin and wondering why the hell I wasn't going anywhere. She usually gets all excited when I gear up thinking she is going to go with me and, well she did this time for sure. She must've stood there almost the entire ride waiting for the bike to jet forward. It was quite a site to see.

I sold a few items via ebay last night and I'm working on a few more. I'll post some links to the items as soon as I can, but my seller name is hilimirej if you are bored and want to search me out.

In some odd news, EPO maker to sponsor bike race? What's next Budweiser to sponsor AA meetings? Balco to start a baseball farm team? Anyone else find this odd. But hey they are putting money into bike racing and I like that. We vote with our dollars, and I hope you purchase items from bike sponsors and prove to them their marketing plans are worthwhile.

What I learned in College

So, erin is working on her gmats to head back to school. She has studied more in the past few months than I have in my lifetime. That is no joke, at college I spent a fortune on books, only to return them completely unopened at the end of every semester. For me, somehow I learn it as its taught or I'll never pick it up..

As Erin is going working on going back to school, I figured I would share what I really learned in college:

1-Garbage Cans make easy and fun tackling dummies late at night

2-Whenever a place says it is open 24 hours, don't trust it, after being holed up in our apartment one night (because the cops were outside waiting to arrest us) we got hungry and went to the 24 hour bagel shop, it was frigging closed!

3-Riding a toboggan down the beer covered stairs of a frat house is all fun and games, but your tailbone will remind you of it years later

4-Girls can get into any bar they want, it sucks for guys even with a fake id, but I had access to anywhere cause I fixed the pool tables/dart machines so I could always sneak in as needed

5-Cheeseburger subs are great late night snacks, but never ever ever, eat a pita from the pita planet, I still cringe just thinking about how god-awful those things were

I start training back up next week so I will have some actual thoughts about bike racing soon

Season Break

What a perfect time to take an end of season break. The weather has been absolutely horrid here, and I would much rather be sitting inside with my babe and lizzy (my dog) in front of the fireplace.

Seeing as how I don't race cross', I am taking my end of season break. Although I probably would race if I could figure out how to support 3 race rigs/seasons/more weekends away from home. Taking an end of season break is great, till about day 7. Living a rigorous lifestyle of training, concentrating on eating healthy (i said concentrating, not always doing it!), making plans for race weekends becomes ingrained. To take a few days off of it feels great, and eating mcdonalds and donuts is fun, but right now on day 8 with no exercise I feel like a blob. My legs are hairy, I'm staying up late, eating anything I want, and starting to crave exercise. Odd, but about right, I should be ready and geared up to go once my training season starts next week

On a side note, I have begun using David Allen's GTD or "Getting Things Done" system and installed it into my lifestyle. If you check out my stats page, you'll see a link to my to be done list and maybe get a sense of what I'm accomplishing here.

Frank Overton-Frank's training plan has helped me rise to the very top and he keeps me in check when I'm in doubt of myself

The season is over!-Plattekill wrap-up

What a lovely day for a bike race.  Awoke to a nice cold drizzle/downpour.  Packed up and headed to Plattekill for the race, it was around 40 degrees and 40 mph winds.  To top it off, they loaded us up on the chairlifts and took us to the top of the mountain to race, ie no access to the car and no place to stay warm! 4 laps around a 4.5 mile course

I focused on staying warm and dry so my warm-up consisted of a few quick rides around the start line and the first 300 meters of the course.  It was a small group, I was the only pro cat racer and about 10 other experts.  I hit it hard off the start and cleaned house in the technical sections, not bad considering I was riding the course, sight unseen.  I flew around and led the first lap, but was caught just after the start finish line.  I stayed hot on the riders heels throughout the second lap, any ground he was taking from me on the climbs, I was taking back in the technical sections, on one of the climbs, the 3rd rider in our group put up a nice charge up the hill and got off the front.  I was slowly losing power as my lower back was beginning to ache really bad and thus couldn't put the power down on the climbs, by the 3rd lap I was sitting in 3rd place a few minutes down on 1st but I was closing on 2nd.  I grabbed a nice bottle of coke at the start for the last 2 laps and it started to kick in during the 4th lap.  The caffeine caused me to forget about my aching back and get back to the task at hand.I charged hard and soon caught 2nd, who managed to break his chain just in front of me, but my efforts to catch 1st place weren't quite enough.

Overall, my legs were pretty good, just the lungs and back took me out of the race for a bit. Besides, 1st place rider had home course advantage as he lived at the bottom of the mountain and that can go a long ways.  He snagged me by about 2 minutes or so.

My poor mother had to work alot harder than I did to stay warm as she rode the lift to the top (for the first time ever) and stayed the whole time to feed me, thanks ma :)

Plattekill always puts on a good race as they just got back into the xc side of it as they were doing construction on the mountain the past few years. They always hand out some good prizes, in fact the first person to email me can grab my $25 spy sunglasses gift certificate, as I just recently picked myself up a pair of tifosi. Look out for a good series to come from them next year, and maybe a 6 hour race as I spoke to the promoter about joining the nysers

This season is wrapped up and I'm looking forward to recharging the batteries and coming out with a full head of steam next year!

As its time to rest...I'm on my way to get me a twelve pack and some mcd's! Frank, you're not reading this are you?

Apple has released Video iPods! Just as I was excited to buy a nano, now gotta switch gears and get me a video iPod, I don't think it is the real ticket, they were more moving to sell videos through iTunes 6. I can't wait till they sign with NBC and The Office is available, I love that show.

I have an addiction to apple, especially their iPods. I had (have but broke) a 3g 10gig, shuffle and mini, but I still want a nano and a video iPod! It's like drugs, they feed you little bits and then bam!! you gotta have everything that they give you all at once.

Back to bike racing, I hope the weather holds up thru this weekend for the final race at Plattekill. I always liked that course, I hope it is the one that starts at the bottom and climbs all the way to the top. The course at the top is ok, but usually in October wearing bike gear on the lift is way too friggin cold. And what if I forget something?

My current tunes/sheps letter

I figured after a rough weekend I would share with you guys some of the top tunes that I have been listening to lately on my iPod.

The number one song on my iPod.. "My Coco" by Stellastarr*, a few other top faves;
The Bravery's new Album, the free Album I found online by Harvey Danger, the new Coldplay album, and I'm hoping to get the new My Morning Jacket Album, "Z" this week as the single "Off the Record" is awesome.

You'll notice a new page I added to the sidebars, "Podcast" You can click over there and see what the lates episodes are about and hopefully you'll download them and check them out.

I found this on

Canadian mountain biker Chris Sheppard recently
tested positive
for recombinant erythropoietin (rEPO) after an out-of-competition test at his home in Kamloops, Canada, and was subsequently suspended by Canadian Cycling and . He was liked in the mountain-bike community but is now a pariah. Sheppard used to send a personal email to his sponsors and friends on a regular basis; a diary of sorts. The email was called the 'Shep Report'. What follows is what the outcast rider calls 'the final Shep Report.' In it, Shep, as he is known to friends, explains what led to his decision to take EPO and the consequences.

First and foremost I have to say that I cheated. Point blank. I have let down my girlfriend, family, friends, sponsors, fellow racers, and National team supporters. I have been led down a path that ends my career with question marks and lost hope especially to those who looked up to me. All I can say is I AM SORRY. There is no justification for what I have done - just a history of why I was pushed to this point. I am not trying to raise sympathy, nor have people feel sorry for me. Cycling is a tough sport and after 17 years of racing clean and pointing the finger, I gave in during hard times. I wanted what was taken away from me; that is, years of hard work culminating in a solid season that ended with an accident and my spiral into depression.
Some of you have already stopped reading and I don't blame you. It has taken months of me living every lyric from AFI's "Sing the Sorrow" for me to finally sit down and let it out. I could have drifted off into oblivion to never care again but I can't. I can't let this blow over and start a new chapter while not at least explaining myself to those that have become my family. In the end I am a cheat but I am not the guy who is saying, "I didn't" to his grave. I "did" and it has wrecked me more than my accident last year. For those listening, for those young guys I have let down, having fun has always been my claim. Doing this drug free hasn't been a battle because I loved the hard work, the miles, and the muscle pain. Ask any racer that has trained with me and they'll say I definitely over trained to the point that had to affect my results over the years. I guess that is why I have mostly kept to North American soil where the word "fun" can still be applied to our ritualistic suffering.
When I was struck by a truck last summer a few things occurred in my body that I have not been able to reverse. At first I thought things would be OK considering I didn't have to spend time in the hospital - then I raced. From leading the NORBA STXC and second in the XC series I started my descent into desperation and depression. I took almost 6 weeks off the bike while undergoing rehab for my back (which is ongoing), then started a slow build up to the season. For five months, every day felt like I had not had my morning coffee (to those who don't sip-each day felt fuzzy) while my back was always painful. I look back at my dark, days in December when I mentally started to fall apart. My therapist was working on the back pain I had while breathing as two of friends suggested over and over see a clinical psychologist. "I am a professional", I thought. "I am mentally strong and don't need help to get through it. I'll just keep on working hard and everything will be better. "
How wrong I was.
I continued body work, physio, and an hour a day rehab into the spring yet my back was still painful in the morning while driving me insane while I rode. As soon as my heart reached high aerobic zones it felt like a nail was being driven into my vertebrae. To this day I still receive a friendly reminder of that truck running the stop sign each morning and during each workout. My biggest issue would be the concussion I received. Since the accident I have not been able to raise my heart to within 10-12 beats of last years' maximum. An athlete's number one weapon is his brain. It seems that the problem that haunts me is my ability to concentrate. No matter how hard I try, I loose focus causing me to fall short of my body's maximum during training and racing. I think the worst part of this injury is that it extends past racing and into my everyday life.
Let me repeat: I have dug my own grave. These are not excuses and I will forever have a tainted reputation. I am sorry to those I have cheated.
As my poor racing and training continued I lost hope and my heart deflated. I have worked on my position, efficiency (thanks Andy, Scott and Justin in Bend) power to utilize what I have left. Clinging onto something will bring out the Devil's advocate in a hurry and that is what happened with me. Once again this does not justify cheating but my mind weighed the positives and negatives of, "It's not cheating, you're just making up for what was taken away".
Passion is a powerful drug and for a second if all of you could think of the one thing that drives your every day, that makes you smile even in the worst of times-then have it taken away. Ouch. I was blinded. I fought with these thoughts all spring pushing my girlfriend away while being drawn into self-loathing. It was at this point that I chose to do what I did. No one pushed me into it. No one told me how to do it and above all I didn't have hands on learning. I just did it. I felt cheated at the time. Can you believe that? I guess it is tough for all of you to accept and I don't blame anyone that is disappointed nor do I blame people posting on the internet or talking behind my back or thinking that I cheated to achieve past results. I can only say that I have never doped and that my results are consistent for year to year. As are my hematocrit levels, blood values, testosterone all which can be verified through past UCI test dates, out of competition testing and controls at the races.
Only after the fact you come to realize how cheating affects other people and how I didn't think about my girl, family, sponsors and supporters. I was so passionate about something I would risk my life to keep it instead of moving on. That is how the top can blind you. How a love so strong overwhelms judgment. The irony in it all was the fact that I was tested the first day I did it. My folks always preached to me that "A Sheppard should never gamble because we always loose". A bit of a weird way to be brought up but those words are so true. I kill myself every day on the mistake I made.
So now I reflect on a career that is tainted. Canada has always bred its athletes to believe that if they work hard and believe in themselves, they can lead a drug-free career. I have lived this statement for 17 years while fighting for every mile and every position. Through extremely hard training camps month after month, year after year the current crop of Canucks had a Russian mentor whom we wished to excel for. This belief in oneself was the foundation for all of us to push our limits. Now I push through one of the hardest parts of a lost career - the inability to spread my passion for cycling to others. To see the spark in a 10 year olds eyes after finishing his first race.
I have set it upon myself to open children's eyes to the world of cycling and life outside the normal boundaries. At every race I preach self-belief, and to have fun. When out with the younger National Team or American riders I repeat the same words of advice I was passed on while training with Canada's past greats. This is a mentorship I wanted to continue through my last years as a cyclist but I have jumped off a cliff with no way of stopping my fall. Now, every person I talk to - every time I open up - I feel the pain in my back twinge. It hurts me because in the end my fellow racers, who are my friends and my family, will only remember the spike I hammered into their backs.
I am sorry.

Yellow Jackets swarming...

Well... The Bills game was certainly an exciting event for the crew that I went with. Without a doubt something incredibly interesting happens at hte games every year. At least the rain held off!!

Had some fun tailgaiting in the parking lot with my ol' man and his crew as I arrived with them, then went over to meet my brother and his crew to get my ticks and head into the game. All was well until the Bills got a big lead and I got a few beers in me, I decided to remove my fleece and sport my F@*k the Dolphins T-shirt. Got a few applauses from the crowd and headed to the pisser. As I leave a cop in a yellow security jacket tells me he is taking my shirt. With a few drinks in me, "Hell no, I'll just take it off" He responds that he is taking it or I will get kicked out, "That's Bullsh*t, I paid for this shirt, you are going to pay me for it...." Needless to say I removed it.

After halftime, my brothers fiance who weighs in at barely a hundred pounds passes out in the stands from too much alcohol. Begins to get a little sick and they decide to let her sleep. About 9 yellow jackets swarm her and tell my bro she has gotta go. I tell them to relax and let her sleep it will be fine. They decide she has to go, so my brother and Uncle start the process of carrying her dwon the steps and out. In the tunnel the yellow jacket says, he needs to talk to me. I tell him there is no problem and I am leaving. Within seconds the hothead killer b's have me pinned against the wall, and begin escorting me out. I was bit shocked that it took 9 guys averaging around 225 to take out a 140lb guy. The ass on my left wrist begins to push a little bit too hard and this sends me over the top!

I ask him to let go and he pushes harder, and now even a few bystanders can see I was being roughed up for no reason and tell them to let up on me. This only causes them to get more excited and po'd at me. At the gate they ask for my ticket and I hold it up but none of them take it, so I drop it on the ground. Pretty much infuriating them all at this point, my poor babe e is screaming at me and crying over the situation. I gave them the ticket, remembered their badge numbers and they closed the gates.

Poor becky my brothers fiance is in the infirmary getting some iv's and is released. Meanwhile I'm waiting for my ol man to take me home. What a friggin exciting day. The yellow jackets had some right to tell me to relax, but I had worn the shirt to the games for 3 years, and they could've relaxed a little bit as I was on my way out the gate when I told them I was leaving and everything was ok! I mean wtf, I think they were on a bit of a powertrip.

Oh well thats what a skinny cyclist gets when I drink a few beers after abstaining for a season! At least I have a good story to tell about the whole ordeal :)

TGIF

It's finally friday! I've been holding my breath all week for the new version 3.2 of rapidweaver (the program I use to design my site). If you use a mac and want to do web publishing simply and do it right check out rapidweaver.

I finally can sleep in 2 days this weekend, just a nice day of training tomorrow and then the Buffalo Bills-Miami Dolphins game on sunday... The weather has turned to crap here. Tomorrow will be a slog fest off-road down in Naples again. I've found that this time of year, unless I race I have no desire to ride in circles, I like a nice long ride that has no backtracking or repeating sections. I hate to even do road rides that return via the same road as the one I left on. I don't mind going back to the same spot to ride, I just don't want to pass the same tree/rock/root 10 times in a row!

I'm here at work with nothing to do, except answer the phone. I want to sleep under my desk George Costanza style, except there is a video camera that points right at me. The boss is on vacation, but everytime he checks in he tells me he has been watching me. Big Brother is always watching!!

If you need to get in touch with me for a short time my temporary email will be sprocketjockey at gmail.com. I am renewing my .mac service, but it is under the family pack and I have to wait until the 11th!!

As you can see I changed the format of the site to something new, leave me a comment and let me know what you think of it!

I'll leave you with a picture of my dog, Lizzy, she happens to actually be faster than me in the short run, but I am building her endurance up and she will be taking all the other biking dogs down in the future.

Leaves are changing...

The leaves on the trees are changing and that means the days are getting too short. Seems like every time I go out for a ride, I'm getting out the door late leaving me with less time to ride and I always forget my light set-up! Man is it incredible to look at the different colors of the leaves when you're temporarily blinded by the wonderful lactic acid induced haze, seems like you're tripping on acid when you look out into the hills and see the swirling colors.

I hit the dirt yesterday down in Naples, doing stid hill and OCP. I ran out of time but would've loved to climb over the top of Bristol Mt also. On the road between the two, I came across a roadie decked on his ride, who refused to recognize me. Now, I was on my mt. bike, a little bit dirty, I waved as I usually do, The guy didn't even bother to look in my direction. In his haste to look all hardcore he had to keep on pumping forward. I just had to chuckle to myself, unless your joe-pro, show some respect to other riders, I wave to grandma when I'm out for a ride. Who knows it might go a long way in producing interest in the sport in the long run.

Today, is the last of our warm front, its been near 80 and perfect every day. It would probably last forever, except I have tickets to the BIlls-Dolphins game this sunday. That is the sole reason it's getting colder, with any luck it will probably snow there. The weather when I usually go to the game is either raining, snowing, below zero or any combination of the previous. But a little bit of alcohol keeps the body warm. Plus I get to wear my F@#k the Dolphins! T-shirt, always a fan favorite. My brother is a big phins fan so I love to get him going anyway I can.

Not as expected

I raced yesterday at the Hudson to Highlans/Campmor Series finale. It was at Blue Mountain in Peekskill.

The course was incredible, really rocky, technical and flowing. Not alot of climbing, but never really any flat sections. 3 laps ~10 miles

A small spattering of pro/semi-pros showed up (8 to be exact). Off the gun, I missed my pedal and couldn't get my foot in...so I gave chase to the group caught em and was at the tail-end, bobbled on the rocky climb and lost some ground, but had them constantly within reach. Must've banged my rear derailleur on a rock somewhere as it jammed up in the spokes, quickly pulled it out and was on my way, only to have it happen again, this time it took a good 5 or so minutes to get it unstuck and bend the der and the hanger so it wouldn't do it again, by this time I was a ways down, even caught by most of the experts. I pushed it hard on the 2nd lap, and the 3rd lap the chain jumped over again into the spokes, I almost was resorted to walking the course but got it out after another good 5 minutes or so of fighting with it. After that I just took it easy coming in.

Tough day in all...but oh well that's racing. After not having raced on the dirt for a good month or so, I hope to come back stronger in 2 weeks at plattekill for the last race of the season!

At least I hope I will be faster than my dog, I've been doing my easy rides with her off road lately and she is keeping up no problem. Hell after the race on the short ride back to the car I couldn't even keep up with her on the little rise!!

Also, my 3rd edition of This Week in Cycling Podcast is up! Check it out in the iTunes Music Store under Podcasts>This Week in Cycling it's located in the sports section.

Back to racing...finally

Well, I'm close to finishing my season, or ready to start another...All depends on if I pick up a cyclocross bike or not. I've never tried cross, but riding in the mud sounds fun, just the running part sucks. Maybe I'll just bunny-hop the barriers :)

After taking a month plus long hiatus from racing, mentally I'm refreshed and ready to tackle the remaining few races, but physically I think I've lost a little fitness as feels like it has gradually declined due to the 'fun' riding rather than 'fitness' riding.

It's Friday night, my babe is in Boulder and I am sitting home with absolutely nothing to do. How boring, but it might be a blessing in disguise. I am looking forward to the seasons end so I can do a little bit of hard partying on the weekends...

Weekend Wrap-up

I'm here still in the adirondacks, at least until tomorrow night...

I did some more riding with a CO from Clinton Correctional (co= corrections officer). Shaun and i hit a local weeknight racing hotspot and his local stomping ground. Shaun is a former mtb racer himself and looks like he can still tear it up without any problems. It was fun and wrapped up my weekend of riding. Most of my earlier riding had been off road but not on singletrack.

Singletrack for mt. bikers is like Edmund's turkish delight, once you have a taste of that oh so wonderful treat, it is all you want and all you ever think about, causing some unfortunate souls to do such things as spend all their income and time riding a bike, taking days off from work to ride and forgetting about life in general as your next piece of singletrack is your sole focus. Oh the white witch is wicked. wicked indeed...

Tom Boom-Boom Boonen pulled off a huge win today taking the World Championship title!! hell ya, that-a-boy Boonen, he kicks some ass i tell ya

What the hell happened to my bears!! KO Kyle Orton was ko'd by the bengals today with 5 freakin interceptions, ahhh!! It's only cause I watched part of the game..

Jim McMahon proof that he is a better quarterback than Dan marino...Most wins without a loss as a rookie...and a super bowl ring...take that bub!!

Adirondacks part deux

Where to Begin...
The final GVCC race went off last Tuesday night, my sorry ass was whupped from all the mt. biking I had done over the past weekend. I covered some early attacks, even took a solo flyer for a bit before I was bridged up to. After that I went back to the pack and proceeded to simply die a disastrous death. I was spent and slobbering on my stem so I hung a left and rode home.

My drive is a little low right now, the end of the season is nearing and I'm getting tired. Besides that my job sucks ass, typical work crap, but apparently I was born without my mindreading skills so that means I can't perfom my job task as properly noted in our employee handbook.

Fortunately plans are moving forward for a possible ship-jumping maybe at the end of next summer.

I'm up in the adirondacks again working. This time I skipped bringing the road bike and brought the mt. bike. I headed down to Mt. Van Hoevenberg the site of the 1980 Olympic XC skiing games and the 24 hours of the Adirondacks. Bummer that was cancelled this year as it would have been this weekend. The complex is closed during the week at this time of year so I tooled around and got lost trying to remember the 24 hour course. I did head over the the bobsled run and checked that out. I rode to the top of the hill, put my bike in the run and started to head down, my brakes were squeeling like a banshee from hell so I decided to make an early exit before I got caught (there were some lights on and a few carss). Besides that stuff was pretty steep, those fellas are nuts!!

Weekend/New site features

I spent the majority of sunday, in my saddle enjoying the late summer sun and 7500' feet of climbing down in Naples. Mark and Suzanne Hartman, Jim Hogan and myself decided to take a nice epic ride up and over every mountain bike trail that we could find, forming a nice 55 mile loop. The ride was killer, super hard technical stuff, tons of climbing, incredible views.

It was pretty much the best ride, I've been on all year. All of us enjoyed ourselves and the beautiful day, HUGE PROPS to Suzanne who could've opted out but decided to slog on and finish the ride.

I was suprised that I had anything to finish the ride with as my babe e and I attended a wedding the night before. I was all prepped to mow down on some wedding buffet, but what did I get...crackers! Nothing but apps, so I had a nice long day on a stomach full of crackers....

Check out the sidebar to my site now!
Images and links to my sponsors, plus a button that lets you know if I'm on aim or not. If I'm online and you have aim click it and it will im me, pretty cool. Took a bunch of time learning some html, but I will learn some more and get some cool stuff up.

Don't forget about the podcast I put up on friday either!!

PODCAST IS HERE

My podcast, aptly titled This Week in Cycling is here! It's a little bit rough around the edges and I will hopefully polish it up in the coming weeks.

To listen to it thru iTunes for now click on the RSS Feed link and copy the link, open iTunes, go to advance > subscribe to podcaste and paste the link there (http://www.jasonhilimire.com/files/page0.xml).

I will figure out how to get it so that you can subscribe thru the iTunes music store soon enough.

For being as quiet and shy a person as I normally am, talking into a microphone for the whole world to listen to is a little a bit of a scary experience. It is much harder than most people could imagine.

Dopers Suck!

What the Hell, Mr. Sheppard were you thinking??

http://www.velonews.com/news/fea/8879.0.html

Doping is just wrong, I don't care if its shuffleboard, baseball or cycling. Why put your body thru the after effects of it all just for some piece of glory. How do you explain to your grandkids that you were on top of the world, but then you couldn't race for 2 years or the rest of your life.

I'd rather finish last in every race knowing I was clean than finish 1st once on dope. IMHO

GVCC-Riga

Races seem to be getting quite a bit shorter, with the daylight dwindling. Plus know all the team are using some real tactics. The course isn't overly hard and its tough to get an attack off or a break going anywhere you try. After a few unsuccessful attempts, I sat in for a while and went on the hill on the second lap. Had a gap with Matthis, John Deshaw (sp?)and a Towners (not sure who), Matthis said he would work and I knew John would also, we got up to speed quick and Chris Riley bridged across. The 5 of us worked well together and were not going to get caught. Coming into the final k's it was game on. I found myself on the front, not exactly where I want to be, I did slip off on a rise and should've probably attacked, but I was hesitant, cause I actually wanted to sprint. Well no one made any moves and we came 3 wide into the final 600 meters, I decided to jump on John's wheel but gear skipped and I lost contact with them, ended up 4th with John taking the win.

Can't think of a title

I spent the majority of my weekend mountain biking on some awesome trails with Casey a bro of mine. We had a hell of a good time as it was part of the Highlander and we had decided to do the 25 mile loop twice. We started out around 7:30 in the morning and finished up in the late afternoon. You couldn't have asked for a better day, the sun was out and the sky was a clear blue. We weren't really pushing the pace by any-means and stayed relaxed and enjoyed ourselves. We had some great conversations on multiple topics that were all over the place. I even ran into my ESG coach Bob DeRoo and rehashed the games, what a blast that was! The best part of the ride was the fully stocked SAG stops, packed with cookies and pb&j sammies! The crazy part was that we were the fastest riders of the course without even putting forth any real efforts.

I've been doing pretty much all of my riding on my mountain bike, I have to say that September is my favorite time of the year. I love the cold, crisp morning, hot afternoons and cool but comfortable evenings. Plus the trails are in awesome shape, and the smell of the woods is ever intoxicating. Besides, I feel really comfortable now on my cake , but I guess soon I might be trading that one in for a 29er! I am pretty excited to ride one for the 06 season.

Football season started this past weekend, and with it starts off the fantasy football action. This week I nudged past my brother and lost a key player to injuries. If I pull of a 1st place this year like last year I'm running a dynasty for sure.

I'm racing tonight at the GVCC Riga race so I'll give a full update, and actually have a report of some racing news up here :)

oh well...flats happen

new logo design 2005

Ej hooks me up with some fat stickers for my rides, if you see me out there, let me know and I'll show you his work.

So the highlander tt went off, I thought I was doing pretty well, till I hit the base of the main climb and my front tire started to go soft. Pretty much had to stay seated the whole time and thats tough on such a steep climb, at the top I swapped wheel with a spectator. Them's the breaks. 22:15, winner was 19:55...I shoulda been around 20:30-45.

Will do the mountaineer part of the highlander tomorrow, possibly twice

29ers, hmmmm!! ;) I like em alot

work, work, work...

Well, looks like work will get in the way of racing again. I have to head back up to the Adirondacks the 21st-25th to cover for some personnel up there. At least I'll get to do some great riding again.

I'll be up there with my brother, staying at his place, so we will just have to eat like King's on the company credit card!

I'm sitting here similar to last week at work and not feeling good. I could feel it coming on again last night and it kinda put a damper on any hard efforts. Hopefully, I will shake this cold soon

Last night was the GVCC race at Mendon Ponds. I get pretty much screwed over a little at these races. I have no teammates to help me so I'm stuck covering most breaks, while all the other team get to keep some fresh legs in reserve. 3 guys from all the teams there get up the road, I wait thinking they might not chase me down, make my move, and a car comes, essentially killing it. After that, I was covered by the whole pack. Oh well, thats racing.

I am super excited to be meeting the new area rep, Matt Koss for Gary Fisher/Trek/Lemond on Friday. We are going to try to hash out the details about the 2006 season. I'm can't wait, if its a deal similar to this year I will be super pumped. Fisher makes some sweet rides, and I am pumped about there 06 line-up.

I'll be at the Highlander this weekend so I will let ya know how that goes with the Gannett Hill TT and I think I am going to do the mountaineer...

Did anyone see the new nano pod was released today?? Apple is without a doubt kicking some butt in the mp3 player arena.

Goodbye Summer

"Squeaky swings and tall grass
The longest shadows ever cast
The water's warm and children swim
And we frolicked about in our summer skin

I don't recall a single care
Just greenery and humid air
Then Labor day came and went
And we shed what was left of our summer skin"

Listening to ''Summer Skin'', by Death Cab For Cutie

So it's here and gone, summer is pretty much over. For most road racers, this was pretty much the final weekend of racing, cyclocross racers are chomping at the bit as they start up soon, mt. biking has a few weeks left, but the trails are in the best conditions of the year.

You'll notice at the bottom of every blog entry is a comments link, If you click on it you can add a comment for anyone to see that visits the site.

I went down to Naples on Saturday and did the OCP/Cutler/DEC epic, I love that route, 30 miles of mt. biking with about 4 major climbs and the most technical descending ever. I went by myself, no iPod or anything else, just hammered the trail away with my own thoughts. I needed that ride, it was great, trail conditions were perfect, the smell of the woods was incredible and everything went right. I was completely lost within the trail and came out with my soul totally cleansed. I love those kind of rides and it seems like fewer of them happen every year as racing becomes more and more important. One thing I did come across that was pretty funny and odd; I am out deep in the woods and I hear some movement so I keep riding thinking its deer or something and I come up on some people. Turns out to be a guy and a girl walking, however no hiking clothes or gear, the guys doesn't even have his shirt on and the girl is walking pretty far ahead and putting her shirt on. I think someone was looking for a little nookie action! But they were a long way into the woods for that!

Block Party--Yesterday was the traditional end of Season Neighborhood Block Party. Before hand I played some golf with my best buds, Eric, his brother Adam and Andy. After playing about every sport possible together growing up, we finally got to play a round of golf together. It was a blast. I played golf a ton last year as I as a member of a country club, but this year I've only played twice (including this match). Considering we have a free course right out our back door, that is unusual. So I was quite a bit rusty, but started to come around big time on the back nine and we had some good laughs. It's good to hang out with the old gang.

Speaking of the old gang, the neighborhood block party is an annual tradition, of which I just re-entered. For a few years I had been skipping it because I was usually of racing. I went last year and had a ball. This year was no exception, everyone always comes back that has lived on our street. The mix of new and old friends, young and old is a humble celebration of summer and small town life. All of the friends you grew up with that have scattered away, you get to spend the afternoon re-hashing old times with.

Don't let your summer slip away just cause Labor day has come and gone, get outside ride your bike, play with your dog (or cat). I refuse to let is slip through my grasp...

TGIF

It's Friday, I'm at work bored and feeling like shit. For the past few days I've had unbearable nasal/sinus congestion and body aches. I'd be sleeping at home, but I work for my family which means, unless I die I'll be at work. It probably didn't help that the last few laps of the GVCC race on tues was in the pouring rain.

My leg seems to be coming around, although every now and then when I stand up I get a little twinge of pain

If you use AIM or the new Google Talk, my aim name is livtoridedirtusa and my google name is sprocketjockey@gmail.com. You can send me a message anytime you feel like...

Here is a sneak peek at the Gary Fisher line-up for 2006. I hope that they re-up with me for next year. I'd love to be on a raceday for 06 and kicks some tail.

Right now I'm pondering if I'll even race on the road next year. I really enjoy the Nationals and I'm thinking about hitting as many of them as I can and basically just racing those and a few local races. Who knows though.

Have you filled up your gas tank? If prices get any f-ing higher I might be making my commute to work on my bike. It'd be a nice 70 miles everyday...That would add up for some nice volume by the end of the week.

I'll be at the Highlander Cycle Tour next weekend, I'm going to shoot for the Gannet Hill TT, and maybe break 6 hours on the road the next day...

Back to the Grindstone

Well, I'm back here at work for a full week. It has been a busy month or so, I'm still scared of unpacking the bags as I might go away again. Since the Last week in July I was away from home for a total of 19 days!! Being away that much must be like what pro's do. I know that it caused a little stress between me and the gf, but at least we went away to Vermont together. I'm still not sure if the dog recognizes me anymore.

While I was at Snow we went to the Cabana party, pretty boring as the naked crit was a dud. Not nearly as fun as the first year when I was there and participated. I had a picture of me stark naked and showing a little too much, I hid it in my van...then traded it in. I'm sure some mechanics had a few laughs on me. Anyways at the Cabana party was "Backpack Dude". I was wondering, what do these guys that are always wearing packs have in them? He had a apprentice with him, although he must have been very new to being a 'backpack dude' as he only had a camelback on!? Couldn't figure that one out

On other random things my Chicago Bears finally pulled their collective heads out of there asses and signed Cedric Benson, and put Kyle Orton in the number one spot, whew a big sigh of relief. Look out this year as they are gonna be suprising.

On the subject of Football, if you are online and play madden 06 and think you have some skills, try to line up against my brother. He'll kill ya. I'm willing to bet the farm on it. I gave up the game a long time ago, but he has put as much into whupping ass in madden as I have in cycling. Email him if you want to set up an online game. BTW, I gave the game up after I gave him a 60+ point beatdown and refused to play again. I think secretly he is always trying to get better just to beat me, but like Lance I went out on top.

Snow XC

Again, the waiting game was horrid. Waking up at 8 and having to race at 2 is not much fun. You're pretty much trying to conserve as much energy as possible so you just sit on the couch and kill time and eat, thats about all you can do.

My Uncle Jim and his fiance Nancy showed up from Boston to watch the race so that was exciting for them to be out on various parts of the course cheering me on. We are all headed out to go horseback riding this morning.

On to the xc race...You couldn't of asked for better racing conditions, after coming off of WV where it was muddy, and cool, the course here was bone dry and the sun has been shining everyday. I got in a decent warm-up and a good pre-ride the day before so I knew the course well and landed a front row starting spot, exactly where I wanted to be. I launched hard off the start and was in a top 5 spot up the first dirt road section off the climb. Immediately the bungie cord that I was attached to had reached its limit cause it pulled me backwards about 30 spots. My legs just exploded and I had to try and recover for a bit, well it took them quite a while and I was pretty pissed about being so far back.

After that I pretty much chugged on, but my right quad that I had damaged last week in the WV marathon was killing me, I had hit it again during the pre-ride and it just wasn't allowing me to put out any power with my right leg. My assumption is I have a nice deep muscle bruise and maybe tore the quad also as I have been limping around for awhile. So I pretty much rode around the course using only strength from one leg. I did manage to catch and pass quite a few people and picked it up on the last 2 laps. I focused on just having some fun and not worrying about anything else. I have tons of time to recover and I can always try again next year.

Speaking of next year, I'm pretty determined to get to the top of the semi-pro class and most likely going to not spend anytime road racing as I did this year. I'm going to focus exclusively on the dirt and use the road to train. It just takes too much out of me to race 35 or so times and try to be fresh for the dirt. I would also like to hit a bunch of the NORBA nationals, so saving up for them by skipping some races would be best for me.

Snow

Sitting here at Mt. Snow, bored but ready to go. Nationals are a bit odd as you get there quite a bit early and have to wait, racing at 2 pm is just waiting and waiting and waiting. I'd rather go off early in the morning and get it over with.

Knock on wood the course is in pristine condition. I haven't seen anything this dry and this nice in a while. As usual it's full of its nasty rooty and rocky descents and short but leg-busting climbs. I pre-rode today and I'm psyched to get out there tomorrow and tear it up.

Seeing as I'm here with my girlfriend Erin, After the race we have some plans. She is pretty psyched that the hotel offers her yoga and that everything is so close by. But Saturday morning we are going to go Horseback riding. Never done that before so it should be quite interesting. Erin used to be a equestrian rider in High School and College, so I'm willing to bet she will be laughing at me as I flop all over the place.

The Hotel here is sweet. We have everything right here in our room, fridge, kitchen, etc. and the race course is out the back door. Quite a big step up again from tent camping over at Haystack.

The only thing that sucks is internet access is $10 per day! wtf, you'd think they would give you a deal or something!

Is summer ending?

FOR ARCHIVED BLOGS CLICK ON THE DATES TO THE LEFT

Is it me or does the current weather (70's and cool) feel like the summer is coming to an end? I'm sure that everyone is bitchin that its too cold, when they were just bitchin its too hot. I think the weather is the one thing that no one is ever happy with. Also seem like the race season is winding down, but looking at my calendar I still have racing right into October. No cyclocross for me though...

I leave tomorrow for Mt. Snow Vermont, NORBA National. I' m hoping to bust out a great ride. I've worked my ass off this year and ready to earn it. Special Thanks to Frank Overton and Kristen Dieffenbach for setting me up and ready to go. If you are looking to get super fast give Frank a call. If you need some mental edge to get through that final push, look up Kristen.

This is going to be the first real vacation with my babe, Erin. It also happens to be our 1 year anniversary this sunday. Hopefully I don't screw it up too badly and remember it.

Yesterday I worked on a podcast, I figured out how to record my voice, insert a little intro music and whatnot. If you don't know what a podcast is, where the hell have you been living? Podcasting is pre-recorded entertainment that you "time-shift" That is you can listen to it on your iPod (or your mp3 player) anytime that you want. Check out iTunes for some great ones as there are tons out there and you can subscribe to them. If I ever get so inclined I may start a weekly show about cycling and maybe have a few guests to spice things up. I did record an entire show about 20 minutes long, it was a little bit amateurish as there were lots of 'uh's' in there so once I fix that I'll bring you a nice one :)

Also yesterday was the first day we had left the dog home alone for a full 8 hours. She was pretty excited to see me when I arrived home and refused to come back indoors. With that in mind I figured I would take her out to the trails and run her. We headed over to Dryer road and set out for a spin. I had to do some short 45 second intervals, so I was worried what to do with her at that point. Well into the first trail she was more fired up than I was and was holding my wheel, up down and over anything. After some time, I decided to see what would happen if I gunned it in the open field where I usually do intervals on my mt. bike. Well, let me tell you she can haul some serious ass! 45 seconds in the big ring as hard as I could go she was no slouch. She kept right up and even with the short recovery she was still there. I was laughing as it became a race between us to see if I could shake her off or if she could keep up. I was having fun and so was she. After just over an hour of riding including some intervals, I decided it was time to take her home and let her sleep a little bit. I will miss her the next 5 days that I'm gone....

Hopefully I have some net access at Snow and I can bring you a report on how things go down.

Thanks,
Jason

Grandmudders and Grandmothers

BTW, did anyone catch sportscenter last night or today? They showed the start of the marathon from here! I was in the front row all the way to the right of the screen in my normal fisher kit with the blue and grey helmet. Pretty cool? How many people can actually say they were on Sportscenter?

Today was the xc event at Snowshoe. I was quite a bit whooped up from the marathon, but I was looking forward to the race. It rained pretty much all morning so the course conditions were going to be horrid. I went and got a new pair of treads from the kenda guys so I would have some better traction. My grams was a huge help today feeding me for the race, she has been having a good time and has been taking care of me. If she didnt come I'd probably be sleeping in a tent and pissed that I was soaked. I have to thank her soo much for helping me out it's huge to have a support system in place. Thanks Grammy!

I was out warming up and stupidly got a 3rd row starting position. I shoulda been in the first or second row, but oh well. I wound up making some spots up on the first technical descent and taking tons of spots on the long nasty descents. I pretty much cleaned all the descents except on the 3rd lap. Right as I was about to transition off the descent I caught a root and did a perfect face plant right into a large mud puddle. Had to be pretty funny for the 2 guys that were watching the section. I got up spitting up mud and water and laughing. I took a ton of spills out there as there was tons of running and loads of mud, I think my bike weighed about 40 lbs by the time I finished. At least nothing broke off this time around :)

The first lap was good wet mud, but the sun came out and started to dry everything out. Making the mud about 6 inches to a foot deep and sticky as peanut butter. I managed to ride a majority of everything and run where necessary. I flowed much better in the singletrack today than yesterday and I still climbed pretty dang good. I pretty much stayed in the same position for most of the race and the 3rd lap I caught 2 riders in front of me, I launched a nice little attack on the riser on the road section, but that freaking hurt pretty bad. I was oh so close to 11th and 12th as I could actually see them coming into the climb by silver creek resort. Where the hell they went I'm not sure as they finished 3 minutes ahead of me and I was busting ass up that climb.

I managed to come in for a nice 13th place position out of 40 riders. I'm pumped about that and looking forward to racing Mt. Snow with some fresh legs to see how I come out. My time was 3:07, first place was 2:43...thats pretty freaking fast!?

It'd be cool to stick around to see the pro mens and womens race but we gotta get back before hand. I guess I'll catch up with the 2 chicks I helped out by putting their bikes together for them later. They had a nice long story about their tragic adventure. Zephanie and Heather, came from Utah and pretty much everything went wrong for them. I hope they do well and will cheer them on in Vermont.

West Virginia Marathon

Well, Arrived in the mountains of West Virginia around 10pm last night. Did some rally car driving thru the mountains to get here safe and sound, although my grams had to stop to unload her lunch:) whoops!

Marathon went off at 9am this morning. 48 miles of WV singletrack, absolutely brutal stuff let me tell you. If you have ridden ellicottville and know the rockgarden? Imagine that half the course is like that, then add tons of roots everywhere and oh ya, it poured on us the whole time!

Marathon was brutal as usual.  Bishop won and Eataugh in second, both under 4 hours.  3rd was 4:45, I came in 9th at 5:13.

Got slammed to the back in the start as I was squeezed against the fence, putting me to the rear of the group.  Not too much off a big deal as the race is long and start position isn't a big factor.

Boy did I not have it in the singletrack today, center of balance was just off.  I felt like a roadie, but I sure as hell hit the open sections and climbs like a roadie :).

I wound up in 9th place out of 14 in the open class (18 starters).  I was in 6th or 5th for the majority off first lap, but couldnt hold it in the singletrack.  I was passed by a rider then fell into a little lull cause I was frustrated about my lack of technical skills.  I was soon passed by 2 others, but got pissed and realized  was not going to my potential and reeled em in on the flats only to lose them in the singletrack, but caught them on the climbs.

I followed 8th the whole second lap, caught him on the super long climb and took off, but he held into the singletrack and got passed me.  I worked hard on the flats and the final section thru the riverbed there and was oh so close and probably would've caught him on the final feed zone climb, but right before I hit the 1 mile to go then, "it happened" my freaking crank arm fell off!? Put it back on rode the descent and started the climb, came off again even after I made sure it was super tight!  Had to run the final half mile!  lost some time there.

Physically I felt awesome in the race, have a bit of a a right thigh bruise from hitting my leg on the seat in a dismount :) freakin hurts but will stretch it and put some medicine on it

Yah and tomorrow is the xc, I'm willing to bet that I am the only semi-pro that does the double. At least its at 2:30 in the afternoon and I can rest up a bit.

Hopefully shimano techs can work their magic and get my rig up and running for me as I wore right thru my brake pads and need some new cables also.

I will give a nice update on that. Right now I've gotta go figure out how to use the miniature washer in our little efficiency. Will probably clog the thing up with mud as I did with the shower.

Stay tuned for tomorrows update!

Pictures of my bikes are finally up

Finally got my bikes cleaned up and got some pictures uploaded of them.
Check them out here

My beloved Chicago Bears lost their quarterback again last night. Rex Grossman broke his ankle in a pre-season game. Only has played 3 freaking games for the team as he tore up his knee last year. He was supposed to be the saviour of the Bears. They were finally going to have a good quarterback...oh well. Hopefully they sign Cedric Benson and establish a good running game.

I picked up a new album off iTunes by Kings of Leon "Aka Shake Heartbreak", I thought the new Coldplay was good, but this album kicks some ass. It's great to listen to on my shuffle when I'm out training.

Some of the logos are missing on a few of my pages but as soon as I transfer everything over from my other site I'll fix that.

Site Finally Updated!!

I finally got around to updating the site. Been some time but my computer went down. So my payments on the old one were finished, so what does one do? Yup, start making payments on a new one. I got myself and iBook, rummaged up my old college id, picked out whom looked the easiest to convince and got my discount plus a free iPod mini. Hell ya, even got asked by a cute college chick if I was a senior or not. Ummm, yahh. One of those super seniors. Pretty funny sitting there fibbing thru my teeth but I'll take my free mini any day.

I got some cool pics from the farmall race also. Check em out Thanks to photoradius

Adirondacks

I arrived home after 5 days in the Catskills only to head up north 2 days later to cover for my brother as he watched some guy who could never win a super bowl in his life even if he could’ve had ricky Williams, get inducted into the Hall of Fame.

It was nice and as I was doing some prep work for the upcoming norba events, I was able to do a mini training camp. One would think that being in the mountains you would always be riding uphill, but it wasn’t so. The roads were generally flat with a few rollers. They must have tons of money to spend as every road was just about freshly paved. It was nice to be on new roads, see new sights and smells and not have to worry about anything except riding my bike and getting to work the next morning. On Friday I went down to Lake Placid and climbed Whiteface mountain. The road is closed t vehicle traffic after 5pm, so I headed up. 8 miles from the town to the top, rising 3700’ or so. It was intense but my first summit I took it fairly easy. It was eerily spooky as there was no traffic, birds or sounds. Nature in its purest sense. You could use both sides of the road ala ‘tour’ style of climbing and descending. This wasn’t no easy descending though as the road was really choppy and wavy similar to the Fitchburg descent. It was pretty harry leaning thru a turn at 75kph and your tires are not touching the ground for a moment or so. I went back to the climb on Sunday to giver my all. I didn’t feel that great after so much riding so I charged hard but sat at/below threshold for a 54-55 minute summit. The record is around 45 minutes or so. Loose the power-tap and some rest and I could be around 47 I would think?

It wasn’t all fun and games though. As everyday was work at 6, done by 4 on the bike by 4:30-dark, eat and repeat. I was pretty happy to be done, but I got a ton of fitness as it was just what the fascat doctor ordered up for me.

Farmall xc;
Was I still tired from my mini training camp? That would be the key question. I decided to get in a nice long warm-up and ride my mt. bike over to the course and home afterwards. It was about a half hour to get there, but I took another nice hour to keep the blood flowing and my legs open, after a free red-bull I was ready to rip. I was motivated as the family was there and my babe showed up with the doggy to give some more support. Hell even my brother was there, even though he still had tears in his eyes from his beloved dolphins taking a beating by my bears!! I unleashed a hell of a ride and took about 3 minutes off my previous course record. Setting a new record of 1:02:18. Someday I will go back there and break the hour barrier..someday.

My next event is the NORBA Marathon and xc down in Snowshoe, WV. I am super-excited to go as my grams is going with me. It will be here first real vacation in a long time. She is really excited also. But what I am excited about is the fact that I will be in a hotel there and also at mt. snow. No more tent camping for me. Last year at wv, I spent the whole of every day sitting in the car with my cousin brie ann cause it was pouring rain and our tents were floating. What made it even funnier was that she had a kids tent to sleep I and couldn’t stretch her legs out the whole way! Hell I even have laundry so no more hosing down the jersey as my wash or jumping the fence to the hotel for a shower. It’s going to be a good weekend. I can feel it!!

ESG Day 4

TTT: Our men were divided into an “A” and “B” team, basically the Luthers as Wayne was back but not 100%, Peter Edge, Roden, and Matthis. My team was the ‘Shickluna’ squad of Garlapow, Jamesson, Jossyln, and Chris Riley and myself. 42 miles of sitting on the rivet. The effort was going to be pure hell. Let me tell you it certainly was. I felt like I was being tortured pure and simple. Basically like riding in your dream breakaway and giving it everything you have except you are in your aerobars scared to death you are going to tap wheels. Last year our team lost the gold due to a crash in the ttt. I was giving it everything I had on all my turns, helping to lift the speed up as much as I could. I was on the limit most of the time just sitting in, I actually was quite happy a few times to be on the front setting the pace, because I was certain I wouldn’t get dropped from there. The final 10 miles we had to push hard as we were 5 seconds down on the nyc team. Josslyn took a huge turn and dropped the boat anchor going backwards, he gave everything and slung us loose for the climbs ahead (only have to finish with 3 riders). Chris Riley went to the front and gave his all and dropped off launching myself, Ben and Adam up the climb about 1 ½ mi from the finish line. I was setting some hard tempo up the climb and swung off, sitting on the wheels in front of me. Just then it happened, a huge parachute flew off my back and I was going the wrong way fast. I was getting dropped on the climb and loosing time to them. If I was the 3rd rider across the line they take my time, and they could finish 15-20 seconds ahead of me or more at this point. But miracuosly Riley somehow after taking a massive turn re-bridged to us on the hill and had the strength to jump across and make contact with Ben and Adam. I was yelling at him with everything I could muster as I knew he could make it across. He did, and for our efforts we were rewarded the silver medal, by 8 seconds ahead of nyc. Our A team won the gold and our womens team also won the gold.

The Western team thoroughly dominated the games all weekend. We all walked away with a gold overall team medal, plus 11 other individual medals. I must say this was one hell of an experience and to be on the winning side of things and to have made some great friends along the way was incredible. Bob DeRoo and Terry who were our coaches had everything perfectly planned out at our team meetings everynight. It felt good to be an integral part of such a well oil-machine.

ESG Day 3

Criterium, This was a points race meaning sprints every 5 laps and If you had no points, you were sprinting for your place after all the riders who already had points. Made for a tough race with 40 laps and 8 sprints. As usual the western team controlled pretty much the entire race. We had some awesome sprint leadouts from Ben J. , for Adam G. We were still on 9 riders cause Wayner was still sick but feeling better. I pretty much shuffled to the front and to the back the whole race, not really doing much other than protecting my teammates and taking them to the front. At one point 2 nyc riders were off the front, I was told to ‘go to the front’ so I did that and launched myself across to them, well about halfway I ran out of gas, but to my surprise I looked back and there were 5 western riders right on my wheel ready to finish the job. It was a good feeling to now that they had my back right away. Coming to the final sprint I had positioned myself right up into 6th place. I was right were I needed to be, around corner 1, then around corner 4th and 5th go down, I swerve hard and I am slammed in the back by 7th, but I don’t panic. Without losing to much speed I hop the curb, thru the grass and proceed to sprint for 100 meters right down the sidewalk, back onto the grass and off the curb again. I tacked onto the back of the group and made it in with them. A few other riders didn’t fare so well. I know Mike M. tried to follow me but did a face plant as he ran into some lawn furniture. This is where all those mt. biking skills came in pretty handy. It was a pretty insane scenario, but it was pretty fun. Adam G ended up taking the gold for the 3rd year in a row and Ben J took another bronze. Our team fared well with quite a few riders in the top 10.

ESG Day 2

Today, was the tough one, right away we lost Wayne Luther to some food poisoning, and he is out for the crit also. He might be back for the team time trial. To top that off we lost Mike Luther halfway through the race when his chain broke. He walked it back to the feed zone and borrowed Bob De Roo's bike aka "the camel". After a pedal change it made t its first appearance ever at the games. It was quite the site to see Mike on that bike, considering how big he is and the bike was too big for him.

The race course was the Union Vale road course, minus the finish climb. The finish was a fast sprint finish just past the roundabout. Our team executed its tactics flawlessly. Our goal was to always have the numbers and be in control. Right from the gun Adam attacked, once he was brought back, Jay Jossyln hit the field hard. He was away and our team spent a few laps riding tempo, closing down some attacks. Peter Edge jumped away with another rider and made contact withe Jay, giving us 2 out of 3 in the break. We continued to ride tempo and cover any moves that were trying to be made. Soon another rider broke free of the pack and Matthis chased em down like a dog in the junkyard, grabbing him by the cuff and dragging him away. Matthis made contact with Jay and Peter, but they were having trouble, they soon came back to the group.

I must say that throughout the race at this point we were riding very well at or near the front, but one scrawny little climber from Hudson Valley was definately making it a very tough day jumping on every little rise and Ben Jamesson was doing a hell of a job covering his move every time.

With one lap to go; Adam attacked through the finish line and soon our scrappy little climber attacked taking Ben and an Adirondack rider with them, we know had 3 out of 6 up the road. John Roden and myself were holding the reigns in what was left of the peloton. I was feeling god awful at the beginning of the race but was ready to tear shit up of the break was caught. I was sitting in the drivers seat ready to go. Coming to the finish around the roundabout, I was in the wrong gear and shuffled back, I drove it hard to the front to get on John's wheel. John jumped hard with 200 to go and I jumped with him, but the sprinting legs weren't there, I fell out of his draft slowing and allowing 2 riders to nip me at the line. John took 9th (2nd in the field sprint). I took 12 (5th in the field sprint).

How did our boys up front fare? Ben gave it everything to cover an attack by the climber on the final climb and it cost him his legs for the sprint. He took home a well deserved Bronze after all his hard work, with Adam taking fourth and Mike Matthis taking 6th.

It was another good day for the Western team with 5 riders in the top 12, and we continue to hold our lead, although the Adirondack team jumped into second. It was some pretty poor sportsmanship on their behalf as the addy women swept the podium by some constant attacking through the feedzone.

Points race tomorrow, gotta get some rest.

ESG Day 1

Today was by far my most least favorite event; a 10 mile individual time trial. It was on a basically pancake flat course just a short ride here from SUNY New Paltz where we are staying. I pretty much did not sleep at all last night, and it showed in today's effort. I felt good pre-riding the course yesterday and warming up, but the top end wasn't there. My time was a pathetic 25:00 flat, good enough for 45th out of 60, winner was 21:55. It was a slow course due to the wind.

Our team spirit is in high morale as we swept the mens podium, and had 7 guys in the top 12, and we took 2 out of 3 medals in the womans podium. It was a big day here for us and hopes are high that tomorrow will be another big day. We celebrated down at the P & G pub with a few burgers and what not.

The food here at the college is pretty sub-par. I've been eating what I can and filling out my meals with cereal. It's tough though as there is no skim milk only 2 %, it's liking switching to thick cream after so long. Thankfully the weather has cooled off a bit as it was brutally hot on wed when I arrived

My weekend is set around tomorrow's road race and its on the ol Union Vale course, although there is no finishing climb like normal. I'm feeling good and ready for it. Our plan is to stack the breaks in our favor as we have by far the strongest team, and if we play our cards right we should come out on top.

Empire State Games

I'm off to the Empire State Games for the next few days.

Format:
10 mile Individual Time Trial
Road Race
Points Based Crit (sprint every few laps_
40 mile Team Time Trial

Hopefully it will be a successful weekend for the western team! I know that I am ready to go!

I had some good legs during the Dutch Wheelman Crit, but I just hesitated a bit too long deciding to cover a break, alas it was the one that stuck. I tried to bridge to it, came close after chasing for almost 2 laps, but the headwind got the better of me. Went back to the group and remained there for the race, with a few laps to go I tried to bridge again with another few riders, but we were caught. 2 laps to go I put out a solo attack and stayed away until the last corner...

I'm hoping to have net access while I am away so I can give some good updates for everyone. Stay Tuned!
